The DOE defines elementary schools as programs serving K through 8, including those with 3-K and Pre-K and those ending in grade 5 or 6; middle schools as grades 6 to 8; high schools as grades 9 to 12. When is the first day of school in NYC in 2026?
Thursday, September 10, 2026. The last day is Monday, June 28, 2027.
It is the latest start in years, because Labor Day falls on September 7 and school opens the Thursday after. The first closure comes fast: Yom Kippur on Monday, September 21. Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, Lunar New Year and Juneteenth all land on a weekend or inside a recess this year, so none of them adds a day off. The year ends on a Monday, which is worth knowing before you book anything for the last weekend of June.
When are winter, midwinter and spring break in 2026-27?
Winter Recess: Thursday, December 24 through Friday, January 1. Midwinter Recess: February 15 to 19. Spring Recess: Thursday, April 22 through Friday, April 30.
School resumes Monday, January 4 after winter, Monday, February 22 after midwinter, and Monday, May 3 after spring. Thanksgiving Recess is Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27. The single-day closures are Yom Kippur (September 21), Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples' Day (October 12), Veterans Day (November 11), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 18), Eid al-Fitr (March 9), Good Friday (March 26), Eid al-Adha (May 17) and Memorial Day (May 31).
Which days are early dismissal in NYC schools?
Two afternoons a year per school level, three hours early, for parent-teacher conferences. Elementary: November 5 and March 3. Middle: November 12 and March 4. High school: November 20 and March 19.
These are the days that catch working parents, because the school day ends around lunchtime and after-school programs do not always stretch to cover it. The evening-only conferences in September and May do not change dismissal. Three more days have no students at all: Clerical Day on Tuesday, June 8 (everyone except high schools), Chancellor's Conference Day on Thursday, June 10 (everyone), and Monday, February 1 for high schools and 6-12 schools only. With two kids at different levels, that makes up to four separate short afternoons, which is the reason the feed labels each one by level.
Is Election Day a day off in NYC public schools?
No. Tuesday, November 3, 2026 is a remote school day for all students: buildings are closed and classes run online.
For childcare it behaves like a closure, with homework attached. The same applies to snow: the DOE no longer calls traditional snow days, and says school may be in session remotely when buildings close for weather or another emergency. Your kid's login for a remote day is the @nycstudents.net account; if the password is lost, you can reset it yourself from your NYC Schools Account, as covered in the guide to NYC school parent accounts.
How do I add the NYC school calendar to Google Calendar or my iPhone?
Tap one of the buttons at the top. Google asks you to confirm "Add calendar"; an iPhone or Mac asks to "Subscribe". That is all.
- Google Calendar: the button opens Google Calendar with the feed filled in. Press Add. It appears under Other calendars and shows on your phone too. If the button does nothing on a phone, open it on a computer once; Google only accepts new subscriptions in a browser.
- iPhone, iPad or Mac: the Subscribe button opens the Calendar app. Confirm, pick a colour, done. To share it with a partner, add it to a shared iCloud account or send them this page.
- Outlook: the same Subscribe button works on a computer with Outlook installed. On the web, choose Add calendar, Subscribe from web, and paste

Google refreshes subscribed calendars roughly once a day, Apple a little faster. All entries are all-day events that do not block your time or send alerts unless you set one.
What the DOE calendar leaves out
Everything that belongs to your school: picture day, the field trip, the bake sale, your actual conference slot, the day the report card posts. Those arrive by email and in the class group chat.
The citywide calendar is 36 lines. A single class generates more than that in dated messages before Thanksgiving, and none of it comes as a feed. Mamigo reads the school emails in Gmail with a read-only permission and the class WhatsApp groups you choose, as a linked device that can only read, and writes the dates it finds into the same calendar this feed lives in, with one short brief a day for the things that need a parent. When the class parent writes that the concert moved to Thursday, the event moves. It cannot send, reply or react, and it keeps what a message means, never the message itself.

Every row comes from the official NYC Public Schools "School Year Calendar 2026-2027" PDF on schools.nyc.gov, read on 18 September 2026, with the wording kept close to the DOE's. The table and the feed are built from the same dates file, so they cannot disagree, and we re-check the DOE page when it announces changes. When is the first day of school in NYC for 2026-27?
Thursday, September 10, 2026, for all NYC public school students from 3-K through grade 12. The last day of school is Monday, June 28, 2027.
When is spring break 2027 for NYC public schools?
Spring Recess runs from Thursday, April 22 through Friday, April 30, 2027. School resumes Monday, May 3. Good Friday, March 26, is a separate day off.
Does this calendar apply to charter schools and pre-K programs?
It applies to NYC Public Schools from 3-K through grade 12, including Pre-K Centers. Charter schools, private and parochial schools, NYC Early Education Centers and Family Childcare programs set their own calendars, so ask the school.
Is the calendar feed free, and do I need an account?
It is free and needs no account or email address. It is a standard calendar feed (an .ics file) that Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Outlook can subscribe to. If the DOE changes a date we update the feed and subscribed calendars pick it up within a day.
